Before you go

You do not have to take the ferry. The free Galveston–Port Bolivar ferry is the short crossing from Galveston Island, and the line is the long part on summer and holiday weekends. The drive around leaves I-10 at Winnie and takes Highway 124 south to Highway 87.

Walking onto the beach does not require a permit. A vehicle parked on the sand needs a Galveston County Bolivar Beach Parking Sticker, except in the free zones the county marks. The county publishes the current fee.

Beach camping is allowed. Fires are contained fires within the posted size, not bonfires, and not on the dunes. Glass is prohibited. Dogs stay on a leash. The 2024 page said the beach allows campfires. The rules are narrower than that sentence.

Hurricane season runs June through November. On September 12 and 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike's surge of more than twenty feet destroyed most of the houses on the Gulf side of the ridge. Check a forecast before you commit to the weekend.

Fishing is the surf and the North Jetty. Rollover Pass was filled and, as of 2020, is not a fishing cut.

  • Ferry, sticker, and fire rules change in the details. Use the three official links above rather than a copied dollar amount.
  • OpenStreetMap places the Crystal Beach hamlet at these coordinates. The community runs for miles along Highway 87, so the pin is a center, not a single address.

Best season. May, June, September, and October for a swim without the longest ferry lines. July is the busy swimming month. Winter is for walking and fishing, not a swim. Hurricane season is June through November.

In his words, October 2024

You didn't think our list could be complete without an actual beach, did you? Surely not! While most people think of Galveston or Corpus Christi when the idea of a great Texas beach comes up, we're here to tell you about the best kept secret beach. Crystal Beach.

Nesstled just off the coast of Texas, well, as a penesula actually, lies Crystal Beach. The best part about this? Tourists need to take a ferry to the location unless they're willing to drive two hours out of their way. Lucky for you, you're an adventurer, and you'd consider the ferry "part of the journey"; thus, you'll get there in just an hour's time.

Crystal Beach is a favorite of the locals for multiple reasons, they allow campfires on the beach, have a great night life "scene" on their small town strip, and most days are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, fishing, and water recreation.
